Itinerary

Day 1: Fes to Merzouga – A Journey through the Atlas Mountains

Departure from Fes

The adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your accommodation in Fes. After meeting your driver and guide, set out toward Merzouga, a small town at the edge of the Sahara Desert. The drive is an exciting journey through Morocco’s diverse landscapes, offering dramatic mountain views, green valleys, and fascinating Berber villages along the way.

Ifrane – The Switzerland of Morocco

Your first stop will be in Ifrane, a picturesque mountain town known for its European-like architecture and fresh air. Often called “The Switzerland of Morocco,” Ifrane offers a pleasant break from the heat and a chance to enjoy its well-maintained parks and gardens. Take a short walk to stretch your legs and admire the beautiful surroundings.

Azrou Cedar Forest and Barbary Macaques

Continuing on, your next stop is Azrou, home to Morocco’s famous cedar forests. This forest is teeming with wildlife, particularly the Barbary macaques, who are often seen playing among the trees. You can stop here to take photographs or simply enjoy a peaceful moment in nature.

Midelt – Gateway to the Desert

Your next destination is Midelt, a small town nestled between the Atlas Mountains and the desert. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Midelt is also known for its apple orchards and its location at the crossroads between the mountain and desert regions.

Ziz Valley – Oasis in the Desert

As you continue south, you’ll drive through the Ziz Valley, a beautiful oasis dotted with palm groves and kasbahs. The valley provides a striking contrast to the surrounding desert, offering a refreshing view before the arid expanse of the Sahara.

Arrival in Merzouga and Camel Trek

By late afternoon, you’ll reach Merzouga, where you’ll be greeted with traditional Moroccan mint tea before embarking on your camel trek. The trek takes you into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes, where you’ll spend the night in a desert camp.

As you ride your camel, the dunes stretch endlessly into the horizon, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Arrive at your desert camp, where you’ll enjoy a traditional Berber dinner under the stars, accompanied by local music around the campfire. After a long day of travel and adventure, spend the night in a comfortable tent, surrounded by the peaceful silence of the desert.

Day 2: Merzouga to Dades Valley – Desert Exploration and Berber Villages

Sahara Sunrise

Wake up early to witness the stunning sunrise over the Sahara Desert. The rising sun casts beautiful hues across the dunes, creating one of the most memorable scenes of the entire trip. After capturing this breathtaking moment on camera, return to the village on your camel, where a delicious breakfast awaits you at your accommodation.

4×4 Desert Excursion

After breakfast, set off on a 4×4 excursion to explore the Merzouga region. This part of the journey offers a deeper dive into the desert’s unique landscape and Berber culture. During the day, you’ll visit:

  • Khamlia Village – Known as the “Gnawa village,” Khamlia is famous for its Gnawa music and vibrant culture. You’ll have the chance to listen to live traditional music and learn about the history of the village.

  • Mifiss Mines – Explore the salt mines of Mifiss, where Berbers once worked to extract valuable minerals.

  • Oasis of Tisserdmin – A hidden gem in the desert, this oasis offers a peaceful respite from the hot desert sun, surrounded by lush palm trees.

Dades Valley – Stunning Landscapes

After your desert exploration, you’ll begin your journey toward the Dades Valley, located at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. This scenic route takes you through gorge-like canyons and dramatic mountain landscapes. On the way, stop to admire the Todgha Gorge, a narrow canyon flanked by towering cliffs. It’s a perfect spot for photography and a brief hike.

Continue through the Dades Valley, known for its lush palm groves and ancient kasbahs, before reaching your accommodation for the night.
