Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Crossing the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n’Tichka Pass
Your Moroccan desert experience begins with a morning departure from Marrakech, driving over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), the highest road in North Africa. The scenic journey offers dramatic views of mountain peaks, terraced farms, and remote Berber villages carved into the rugged hillsides.
Visit Aït Ben Haddou – A UNESCO World Heritage Ksar
Arriving at the famed Aït Ben Haddou, you’ll explore an ancient fortified village known for its labyrinth of earthen homes and defensive towers. This location is not only a historical marvel but also a favorite filming location for blockbusters like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy.
Stop in Ouarzazate and Overnight in Dades Valley
After lunch in Ouarzazate, nicknamed the “Hollywood of Africa,” we continue through the Skoura Oasis and Valley of Roses, where fragrant Damascus roses bloom in spring. The day ends in the beautiful Dades Valley, home to dramatic rock formations and historic kasbahs. You’ll enjoy dinner and rest in a traditional guesthouse with views of the valley.
Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga Sahara Desert
Discover the Spectacular Dades and Todra Gorges
After breakfast, we venture deeper into the stunning Dades Gorges, famous for their winding roads and peculiar rock formations. We continue to the Todra Gorges, where towering limestone cliffs rise up to 300 meters above the canyon floor—an ideal spot for hiking, photography, and experiencing nature’s grandeur.
Journey to Merzouga and Camel Trek into the Dunes
In the afternoon, we head toward the vast Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. As the desert draws near, the landscape transitions into golden plains and rolling dunes. Upon arrival, you will embark on a camel ride at sunset, a serene and unforgettable trek into the heart of the Sahara.
Overnight in a Berber Desert Camp
Your destination is a Sahara desert camp nestled among the dunes. Upon arrival, enjoy a traditional Berber dinner followed by music, drumming, and dancing under the stars. Sleep in a private tent—either standard or luxury—surrounded by the silence and beauty of the desert night.
Day 3: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Middle Atlas Mountains
Sunrise over the Sahara and Breakfast in Camp
Rise early to witness the Saharan sunrise, an awe-inspiring display of light and shadow over the dunes. After breakfast, return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 and rejoin your driver for the journey north.
Explore Ziz Valley and Stop in Midelt
We follow the route along the Ziz River, passing through vast palm groves and dramatic gorges. Stop in Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, and continue to Midelt, a quiet town located between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. This is an ideal spot for lunch and a scenic break.
Drive through the Cedar Forests and Atlas Mountains
The afternoon drive takes us through the Middle Atlas, where you’ll see forests of ancient cedars and, if lucky, encounter Barbary macaque monkeys. The peaceful scenery is a dramatic contrast to the arid deserts you’ve left behind.
Overnight Stay in a Mountain Guesthouse
End your day in a peaceful mountain guesthouse or a comfortable riad surrounded by nature. Enjoy dinner and a restful night before the final leg of your journey.
Day 4: Middle Atlas – Ifrane – Fes
Visit Ifrane – The “Switzerland of Morocco”
After breakfast, we head toward Ifrane, one of Morocco’s most unusual cities. Known for its European-style architecture, pristine streets, and alpine climate, Ifrane feels worlds away from the bustling medinas of Marrakech and Fes. It’s a great place to stretch your legs, take photos, and enjoy the cool mountain air.
Arrival in Fes – Morocco’s Cultural Capital
By early afternoon, we reach Fes, a UNESCO World Heritage city and one of the most important spiritual and educational centers in Morocco. Your driver will drop you off at your accommodation, marking the end of an incredible 4-day journey through some of Morocco’s most diverse and beautiful landscapes.
