Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka Pass – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Begin Your Journey through the Atlas Mountains
Your desert adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech. Travel through the dramatic High Atlas Mountains, passing the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m)—the highest road pass in Morocco. This breathtaking route offers panoramic views of Berber villages, fertile valleys, and rugged peaks.
Aït Ben Haddou: Explore the Iconic Ksar
Stop for a guided visit to Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved kasbahs in Morocco. This earthen village, built along ancient caravan routes, has been a filming location for Hollywood movies like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven.
Drive to Ouarzazate and Overnight in Dades Valley
Continue toward Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa,” before heading into the spectacular Dades Valley via the scenic Skoura oasis and Valley of Roses. End the day in a charming guesthouse nestled between the red canyons and lush palm groves of Dades. Dinner and overnight stay included.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga
Todra Gorges: A Natural Wonder of Morocco
After breakfast, depart for the awe-inspiring Todra Gorges, a deep canyon carved by the Todra River. Marvel at the towering rock walls—some reaching up to 300 meters high—and enjoy a short walk along the riverbed, a favorite among climbers and photographers.
Scenic Drive to Merzouga – Gateway to the Sahara
Continue through Tinjdad, Erfoud, and Rissani, each offering glimpses into desert life and traditional culture. Arrive at Merzouga, a small desert village on the edge of the Erg Chebbi Dunes.
Camel Ride into the Dunes at Sunset
In the late afternoon, hop on a camel caravan and trek across the mesmerizing golden dunes just in time for a magical Sahara sunset. The stillness, shifting sands, and glowing horizon make for an unforgettable memory.
Sleep Under the Stars in a Desert Camp
Reach your desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with mint tea and a traditional Moroccan dinner. Spend the evening around a campfire with Berber music, then retreat to your tent—available in standard or luxury options. The silence and starlit sky are unlike anything else on Earth.
Day 3: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi Exploration – Khamlia – Nomadic Villages
Watch the Sunrise and Explore the Desert
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, followed by breakfast in the camp. Then start a full day of desert exploration in a 4×4 vehicle, ideal for discovering hidden corners of Erg Chebbi.
Khamlia Village and Nomadic Culture
Visit the village of Khamlia, known for its Gnawa music, and learn about the traditions of former sub-Saharan slaves who settled here centuries ago. Continue your journey with a visit to nomadic families, sharing tea and stories with those who live a timeless lifestyle under desert skies.
Picnic in the Sahara and Return to Camp or Riad
Enjoy a traditional Berber lunch in an oasis or desert outpost, and optionally try sandboarding or ride ATVs through the dunes (available upon request). Spend a second night in your desert camp or return to a riad in Merzouga for more comfort.
Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt
Depart the Desert and Enter the Ziz Valley
After breakfast, begin your journey back north, passing through the Ziz Valley, where thousands of date palms line the canyon floor beneath towering rock walls. Stop for photos and a visit to a local cooperative, where you can taste fresh dates and learn about regional agriculture.
Lunch in Midelt – The Apple Capital
Reach Midelt, located between the High and Middle Atlas Mountains, and enjoy lunch in a cozy mountain town that offers cool air and alpine scenery.
Overnight in the Middle Atlas Region
Stay overnight in a tranquil guesthouse or traditional Moroccan riad in the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Dinner is included, and you’ll rest well after your adventure through the Sahara.
Day 5: Midelt – Azrou Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Return to Marrakech
Visit the Cedars and Barbary Monkeys
On your final day, continue through the scenic cedar forests of Azrou, where you can meet the local Barbary macaques—playful monkeys native to this part of Morocco.
Stop in Ifrane – The Switzerland of Morocco
Make a brief stop in Ifrane, a clean, orderly town that looks more Swiss than Moroccan. Its European-style houses, flower gardens, and alpine feel make it a unique stop on the journey.
